I’m a firm believer in the fact that everything can be painted, and that includes fabric! A fabric sale at Michael’s is not one to be missed, and here’s how to give that plain fabric some personality with a little bit of paint.
Before you begin, here’s what you need to paint fabric.
-paint stirrer
Step One: Depending on the size of your project, mix your bottle of textile medium in a container with your desired paint color. I would use half a bottle for any project less than painting an arm chair. Mix extremely well with a wooden paint stirrer.
Step Two: Prep your fabric with a spray bottle full of water. Fabric should be slightly damp. After the fabric has been prepped, you can start painting!
Step Three: Use your brittle paint brush to paint the fabric. Paint one light coat at a time.
Step Four: Apply a second coat as necessary to your fabric, but as always, make sure that you allow each coat of fabric to fully dry. You’ll probably want at least four coats, but this is solely based on personal preference!
Step Five: Next, you can apply a hand painted (or stencil design!) Mix another bottle of textile medium with your desired color of paint. Mix well. And use a detailing brush to fill in your hand painted designs.
Step Six: Once fully dry, use a small sander block to even out any raised or rough edges. You’ll be amazed at how soft if feels!
